Storage conditions during reactor shutdown

Keep the sludge moist: Anaerobic sludge can easily become inactivated if exposed to air. Ensure the sludge is always in a liquid-sealed or submerged state.

Maintain an appropriate temperature: For short-term shutdowns (a few days to a few weeks), it can be stored at room temperature. For long-term shutdowns (several months), it is recommended to maintain 20–35°C, avoiding low temperatures (<10°C) that could cause irreversible declines in microbial activity.

Avoid drastic pH fluctuations: During storage, maintain the system pH between 6.5 and 8.0 to prevent acidification that inhibits methanogens.

Periodically supplement trace nutrients: Such as iron, cobalt, nickel, etc., to sustain basic microbial metabolism.

Note: UASB reactors are designed to support 'seasonal or intermittent operation,' indicating that they have good restart capability, provided the sludge has not dried out
